Most everybody in average physical condition and some river experience should be more than capable of piloting a drift boat down the Bighorn. There are a few rocks and whirlpools to avoid, but the biggest obstacle to avoid is other fishermen both wading and in other boats. Wade fisherman should be given a wide berth so that no part of the water they are fishing is being spooked by a boat floating by, about 60 feet when possible is a reasonable berth. Other boats should be avoided as well. When passing a boat also moving downstream, observe the lane they are on and project their path downriver, then try not to row over their path for about 300 yards.

Rowing a boat involves looking downstream and making minor adjustments in order to be in the proper position when you get to obstacles or places you would like to fish. The river runs at a slow pace for most it's length so looking well ahead is no trouble. There are a few waves that could potentially count as a class one rapid, but as long as the boat is kept mostly straight there is no danger to be had.
